Starting out

If you are looking to perhaps start a healing meditation practice, here are some steps that might be useful to follow.

1. Construct a healthy supporting lifestyle.

This article will set out some of the basic things that will support a successful healing meditation. Things such as regular sleep, reducing stress, and a good diet are equal and integral to anything you might do with your eyes shut.

2. Begin a Basic Meditation Practice.

By itself, a general or introductory meditation practice may be too gradual in its effects to combat serious, acute illness. It will, however, form the foundation for everything that will follow as you progress to dedicated healing meditation.

General meditation has been found to have incredible healing properties in its own right, however. Far more than simple relaxation, blood pressure reduction, and stress reduction than it is often seen as, the healing properties of meditation.

Quite fundamental physiological changes have been scientifically verified in western, ‘beginner’ meditators as much as many age-old japanese zen adepts - we shouldn’t think that we need radical eureka moments to benefit.

If you imagine illness as the body getting ’stuck’ in bad patterns, meditation has the ability ‘unstick’ it. Many meditators report addictions such as smoking or alcohol fall away easily with a meditation practice, and more ‘physical’ illnesses are thought to respond the same way.

For more information on how to begin a sitting meditation practice, see CalmYourMind.org. An excellent introduction to the equally beneficial practice of walking meditation can be found at our companion site, WalkingMeditation.info. You will find instructions, books, and courses to help you on your way.

3. Find Expert Advice.

You wouldn’t walk into a chemist and start taking pills at random if you suffered from a serious disease, and neither should you go it alone with a serious healing meditation practice. At the very least you should have a wide range of books, websites, and articles at your disposal - most of which you can find here.

However, many of us are far too reluctant to take the time to research and sign up for a course or retreat with a professional in this field. We might think of it as too expensive, difficult to know where to begin, or that it is a ‘personal’ journey, that we will ‘get’ ourselves.

In comparison to western doctors and medicines, healing meditation courses are very inexpensive, and there are ways to find the good ones. If you aim to overcome a serious illness, you would be crazy not to employ someone who is an expert and can help you overcome any obstacles.

4. Use the resources on this website.

Here you will find a range of practices, tips, reports and hints from people who have overcome major disease through meditation - all to get you to expert status as quickly as possible. We also plan to have the largest collection of reviewed books, courses, and retreats on the internet.
